PondMAX Spring & Fall Wheat Germ Fish Food is designed for the shoulder seasons — the weeks in spring and fall when pond water temperature falls between 40°F and 60°F. At these temperatures, koi and goldfish metabolism slows significantly. High-protein summer diets are harder to digest in cold water, and undigested food in the gut is a known source of health stress, particularly in spring when fish immune systems are recovering from winter.
Wheat germ is well-established as a digestible ingredient at low temperatures. This formula uses it as the digestibility foundation, alongside fortified vitamins — including vitamin E, which occurs naturally in wheat germ — and supplemental nutrients to support fish through seasonal transitions.
The 4mm floating pellets remain visible at the surface, allowing you to observe whether fish are feeding and at what rate, even in cool conditions where feeding response is slower. This formula is also appropriate above 60°F as a year-round diet for mature adult koi whose growth has plateaued and who benefit from the lower-protein, more digestible profile. - Feed 2–3 times daily. Offer only what fish will consume within 5 minutes; remove uneaten food.
- Use this formula when water temperature is between 40°F (5°C) and 60°F (16°C). It is also appropriate above 60°F for mature adult koi.
- When water warms above 60°F in spring and fish are again actively feeding, transition to PondMAX Staple Growth or Color Enhancer Diet.
- Do not feed below 40°F — at this temperature koi are effectively dormant and cannot digest food.
- In spring, watch for fish to begin actively approaching the surface before resuming feeding. Resume with small amounts and increase gradually as temperatures stabilise.
